News & Events

The Great Fast: The Holy Days of the Great Fast (Lent) start Monday, February 20th. One of the traditions started in St. Mary & St. Athanasius Church is a reading plan for the family. Please look forward to receiving the annual book either at the church or through the mail.

Project S.O.F.T. is another tradition here in the church relating to the Great Fast. Details will be made available soon on the church website.

With the ever-increasing interest in the Coptic Orthodox Church, a new learning and sharing group will meet to support the growth of each individual newcomer into the Church, as well as to study the evolutionary challenges facing the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Much like the individual meetings, this meeting will be designed for education, as well as for answering your questions. As a group meeting however, it is anticipated that many ideas and much support will spring out of this meeting.

Please note that this meeting’s focus is on those of a non-Coptic background. It is for anyone who is planning on being baptized into the Church, or considering, or just want to attend for an educational purpose only. However, in order to fulfill the complete purpose of this group, I strongly urge those of non-Coptic background that have already been baptized into the Church to attend with us! Also anyone of a Coptic background wishing to benefit or support is welcome to attend.

This group will meet twice a month. For everyone’s convenience, two locations and times are offered to choose from:

Manhattan:
Friday nights at 7:30-9:00 PM The first meeting will be Friday, Feb. 24, 2012
The Greek Cathedral
East 74th St. (Between 1St & 2nd Ave’s) New York City, NY

New Jersey:
Monday nights at 7:30-9:00 PM The first meeting will be Monday, March 5, 2012
St. Mary & St. Athanasius
Washington St. & South 7th Ave. Manville, NJ 08835

Let us pray that the work of the disciples and apostles that started in Jerusalem will continue through this group here in the United States of America.

Deacons: Please be aware that there is a Sunday Service Schedule in effect and a Deaconate Meeting every Saturday evening 7:30-8:30pm

Groceries: The groceries and prepared foods that are made available to you every week are NOT a fund-raising effort but a service to the parish. This is because there are no Middle Eastern grocery stores in the parish area, which extends to Pennsylvania. Those who are making this service available to you cover any shortage.

The Newsletter will no longer be printed and distributed in church rather it will be emailed to you weekly. This new way of distribution will be more effective and convenient for everyone. We can also look forward to a new design and additional informative sections!
